In
1602 Sebastian Vizcaino "discovered" the bay and peninsula and named the
bay after the viceroy of New Spain. Our city got its start when a presidio
was built by the Mexican army in 1770. It became the capitol of Las Californias
in 1776. The adobe custom house which presided over Mexico's only west
coast port of entry still stands today.
It was here in our city that Commodore John Drake Sloat raised the American
flag in July 1846 claiming for the United States the territory later to
become Utah, Colorado, Arizona, California and New Mexico. This area is
now a park located in the midst of a bustling downtown lined with fashionable
restaurants, shops, cafes and nightspots. We have preserved more of our
communty's history than has any other city in California.
In
addition to its historical landmarks, our city is also home to the famous
Aquarium, Cannery Row, Fisherman's Wharf and the oldest jazz festival in
the world. Not far away is the Laguna Seca race course which is considered
to be the number one road course in the world. Nearby can be found hang
gliding and some of the most famous golf courses in the world. |
