San Jose was founded in 1777, as California's first civil settlement under Spanish rule, with a total population of 66. The Spanish-era precursor to our modern south bay city was situated only a short distance from today's city hall. The first state legislature (1849) met here, and it was the state capital until 1851. It is now one of the largest cities in California. Located in Santa Clara County in the SF Bay Area. It is the fourth largest metropolitan area in the United States.
